“I did not speak of rupture”, says AMLO about the position of pausing relations with Spain


President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador clarified on Thursday that he did not talk about breaking up diplomatic relations with Spain when he proposed pausing them the day before, after accusing companies from the European nation of having “plundered” Mexico for years.

The president generated uncertainty on Wednesday regarding the future of the bilateral ties announcing his desire to put them on “pause” until his term ends in 2024, so that the Spanish authorities and companies stop seeing Mexico “as a country of conquest”.

“What I said yesterday is: let’s go, for the good of our peoples, to have a break; I didn’t talk about breaking up, no; I said: let’s calm down the relationship,” he stated in his morning conference.

Jose Manuel AlbaresMinister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain, replied that he would verify AMLO’s statements.

He stressed that Spain has not taken any action to give rise to this type of statement and stressed that the bilateral relationship is strategic, proof of this is the investment flows in both directions that do not stop increasing, which both governments must accompany.
