Gregory Doranthe outgoing director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, has said in an interview for ‘The Times’ that only disabled actors should be cast to play Richard III, that he was hunchbacked. Doran’s late husband, the actor Anthony Sher, made a memorable ‘Richard III’ in 1984, by the way. In his first interview since being widowed, Doran has said: “Tony’s performance now would probably not be acceptable. (…) It’s the Othello syndrome, isn’t it? That moment when white actors stopped thinking about Othello to his repertoire, because it was no longer acceptable to have the face painted black.
