Homicides increased 30% in the United States during 2020, according to the FBI

This Monday the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report for 2020 was released, showing that the homicides in the United States increased nearly 30% from 2019. The 2020 jump in violent deaths marked the “largest single-year increase” the agency reported since 1960.

The context: This data marks the first time in four years that the estimated number of violent crimes in the United States increased from the previous year, the FBI said in a statement. Around 85% of the organizations that could participate in the report presented figures but the submission of information was optional.

  • Some of the cities that did not submit data were New York, Chicago, and New Orleans.
  • Data shows that there are more offenders and victims involved in violent crime between the ages of 20 and 29 than in any other age group.

The data: The homicide rate per 100,000 people was 6.5 in 2020, still well below when homicide rates peaked at 9.8 per 100,000 in the early 1990s, according to data from the FBI.

  • Violent crime increased 5% from 2019 to 2020, according to the FBI, while overall crime decreased 6% over the same time period.
  • “In 2020, there were an estimated 1,277,696 violent crimes,” the agency said.
  • Compared to 2019, the estimated number of robbery crimes fell 9.3% and the estimated volume of rape crimes decreased 12.0%.
  • Last year there were 21,570 homicides.
