Home nurse for pregnant women

Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont in Montreal has created a new service for mothers who have high-risk pregnancies. Nurses go to their homes to prevent them from being hospitalized.

Nurse Stéfanie Blanchette is one of those who provide this care.

She goes once a week to Longueuil to visit a mother who at 30 weeks of pregnancy has already had contractions.

She needs to make sure that her situation and that of her baby are stable.

“Being at home is more comfortable and I can also be with my family,” explains the patient.

Home nurses are constantly in contact with medical specialists at Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont.

They take no risks. If the situation deteriorates, the mothers are immediately hospitalized. This happened 3 times in 5 months.

Since last October, three nurses have made 66 visits to 15 mothers within a radius of 40 km from the Hospital.

The goal is to rapidly increase this number.

“I think that since COVID, we’ve been trying to be creative to avoid long-term hospitalizations as much as possible,” said a nurse.

25 to 30% of the 3,200 women who give birth each year in Maisonneuve-Rosemont have high-risk pregnancies.

150 come from different hospitals in Quebec and are transferred to Maisonneuve-Rosemont which is a specialized centre. This is the case of Jade who arrived by ambulance from Valleyfield 6 days ago at 33 weeks of pregnancy.

“My blood pressure was up so that’s a sign of preeclampsia,” says

She probably could have taken advantage of door-to-door service if it had existed in her area.

The service is awaiting ministerial authorization so that it can be offered in other regions of the province.
