Even if the Châteauguay man managed to speak to his stepfather last Thursday and that the latter said he was safe, things changed later in the evening.

He received a call from his brother-in-law telling him that the man had died following bombings which shattered the windows of their accommodation.

“He woke me up at 3 a.m. telling me he had been killed. My father-in-law was not far from the windows and he was killed by broken glass. My mother was in another room and was not injured,” Sergiy Bychkov told TVA Nouvelles.

The situation remains difficult for her mother, who had to leave her home where she had lived for 30 years, while she had no electricity or heating, not to mention that the windows were completely broken.

She had to move to the suburbs to find refuge.

Sergiy Bychkov left Ukraine in 2005 with his wife and two children to live in Quebec.

He agreed to talk about his story in order to call on the Canadian government to help the Ukrainian people as much as possible.
