Heavy snowfall expected in Toronto between Wednesday and Friday

Environment Canada has issued a winter travel advisory for the GTA and much of Southern Ontario.

Around 10 to 20 cm is expected by Friday morning with reduced visibilities.

Rain showers will mix with snow Wednesday morning before switching to snow in the afternoon. Snow is expected to continue at night and into Thursday before easing in the evening.

Motorists can expect hazardous winter driving conditions and transit may be delayed.

The City of Toronto says they are prepared for the multi-day storm, with over 1,500 personnel, 600 snow plows, 360 sidewalk plows and 200 salt trucks ready to combat the storm. The city says salters will move in when freezing rain begins.

They state “plows and salters will be strategically placed across the city.” They also anticipate plowing crews on major streets and sidewalks from the beginning of snowfall into overnight.

The city asks residents to move their vehicles from major roadways, especially snow routes, before Wednesday evening. They also ask people to maintain a safe distance.

The TTC’s Line 3 in Scarborough, also known as the SRT, will not run Wednesday morning, in light of the inclement weather forecast, a spokesperson said.

Replacement buses will run between Kennedy and McCowan stations, stopping at Midland, Lawrence and Ellesmere stations.

On social media, GTA school boards reminded parents that any decisions about school transportation and closures due to inclement weather will be posted on social media channels starting at 6am on Wednesday.

Toronto school bus tweeted to expect delays.

This comes less than two weeks after Toronto was hit by a massive storm on Jan. 17. Schools were closed, vehicles were stranded and TTC vehicles struggled throughout the day. Some neighborhoods are still digging out after the record snowfall.
