Defense attorney Lloyd Fischler said a hearing scheduled for Monday in the Montreal courthouse had to be rescheduled because a report, based on an orderly evaluation to determine whether the 22-year-old Ngarukiye can follow court proceedings, was not yet ready. .

On November 18, Quebec Court Judge André Perreault was informed that, through a different psychiatric evaluation, Ngarukiye could be held criminally liable for the alleged actions if he were to stand trial. That’s when Fischler requested that his client undergo the second evaluation.

Ngarukiye was first arrested in March as a suspect in the January 28 attempted murder of Sanjay Vig, a Montreal police officer who was shot while working at Parc-Extension. Ngarukiye was also charged with intentionally firing a prohibited firearm, disarming a police officer, aggravated assault on a police officer, and theft of a vehicle.
