Health unit reports 50 new cases of COVID, another death

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported that another life was lost to COVID-19.

The death of a woman in her 80s who lived in the wider community was announced Wednesday. She is the twelfth person to die as a result of COVID-19 so far this month.

To date, 451 Windsor-Essex residents have succumbed to complications from COVID.

Twenty-two people who tested positive are hospitalized and nine of them are in intensive care.

There have been 19,408 COVID-19 cases in the region, including 50 cases reported on Wednesday. Twenty-two were close contacts of confirmed cases, eight acquired in the community and two related to travel. The sources of transmission for 18 cases are still under investigation.

There are 347 active cases, with 18,610 cases considered resolved.

Five local schools have active COVID-19 outbreaks: St. Anne Catholic High School, Sandwich Secondary School, Al-Hijra Academy, Cardinal Carter Catholic Secondary School, and St. Joseph’s Catholic High School.
