Health unit reports 26 more cases of COVID, one death

A man in his 80s has become the latest Windsor-Essex resident to die of COVID-19.

The local health unit reported the death of the man who lived in the wider community on Friday. To date, 462 area residents have lost their lives to the disease.

The health unit also reported 26 additional infections, including 10 people who contracted COVID from close contact, 11 who contracted it from unknown sources in the community, and one who contracted it while traveling. The sources of transmission for the remaining four cases are still under investigation.

There are 199 active cases in the region. Thirteen people who tested positive are hospitalized, including six in intensive care units.

There are active COVID-19 outbreaks in eight workplaces, eight schools, a nursing home, and a community setting.

So far, 85.1 percent of local residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 83.6 percent are fully vaccinated.
