Health unit reports 25 new cases of COVID

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported 25 more cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Seven of the newly infected were close contacts of confirmed cases, five cases were community-acquired, and two were travel-related. The sources of transmission for 11 cases are still under investigation.

The COVID-related death of a man in his 70s from the wider community was also reported Wednesday.

To date, 20,448 local residents have tested positive for COVID, including 464 people who have died, 174 people with active cases, and 19,810 people with cases deemed resolved.

Twelve people who tested positive are currently in the hospital. Five of them are in intensive care units.

The outbreaks remain active in six workplaces, five schools, and four community settings, including the South West Detention Center.

So far, 85.4 percent of Windsor-Essex residents age 12 and older have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine and 81 percent are fully vaccinated.
