Halifax’s Emera Oval will now open for the season on Monday – Halifax | The Canadian News

The Emera Oval skating rink in Halifax is scheduled to open for the winter season next week.

Following a provincial press conference on COVID-19 restrictions on Tuesday, the municipality initially announced that the Oval will not open until at least January 12.

However, in a press release issued Wednesday, the municipality said that “after the confirmation of the province’s capacity limits,” it will now open on Monday, December 27, weather permitting.

The statement said that the maximum capacity will be 230 participants per skating time and access will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Under provincial assembly limits, leisure and recreation businesses and organizations can operate at 50 percent capacity with physical distance.

Skaters will be required to show complete proof of COVID-19 vaccination and a government-issued photo ID. They should also practice physical distancing and wear a mask at all times, including on the ice and in the Oval Pavilion.

“Equipment rentals, including skates and helmets, will not be available at this time, therefore residents will need to bring their own equipment,” the statement said.

“CSA approved multi-impact hockey helmets are required for children under the age of 12, however all skaters are advised to wear a helmet, for their own safety.”

The statement also said that the skating aides will not be available this season.

He said staff will continue to work with Public Health to adjust protocols as needed.
