Grupo Bimbo is committed to achieving Zero Net Carbon Emissions by 2050

Grupo Bimbo, the world’s largest bakery company, announced its commitment – on November 3 – to achieve Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050. This pact includes emissions from its entire value chain, covering scopes 1, 2 and 3, in all areas of operation, logistics, sales, purchasing and marketing.

Scope 1 refers to direct emissions generated from sources that are owned or controlled by the company (for example, energy generated at the company’s facilities, its vehicles, etc.). Scope 2 includes indirect emissions resulting from the production of electricity consumed by the company. Scope 3 refers to other indirect emissions resulting from company activities that are not owned or controlled by the company (for example, rented facilities, employee displacement, operational waste, etc.).

The objective was developed following the framework of the Science Based Targets initiative, and subsequently validated by the same organization that follows a recognized and standardized methodology focused on reducing emissions in line with limiting global warming to 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels, which avoids irreversible damage to our planet.

In this way, Grupo Bimbo becomes the first Mexican food company to commit to the “Business Ambition 1.5 ºC”, joining the “Race To Zero” campaign -first coordinated effort to reduce carbon emissions on time- of Nations United, and that has objectives established and validated by Science Based Targets.

To achieve this, Grupo Bimbo plans to reinforce measures to prevent, reduce or eliminate at least 90% of carbon emissions from its value chain, which will be achieved through the transition to 100% renewable energy, the shift towards a logistics and vehicles with less carbon, the implementation of energy efficiency strategies in all operations and support to suppliers and customers to reduce their emissions through better talks that include technological innovation.

With this, three key intermediate carbon reduction targets have been defined that will allow Grupo Bimbo to achieve Zero Net Carbon Emissions by 2050:

1.- As announced in 2018, Grupo Bimbo, through its participation in RE100 (a collaboration initiative of the Carbon Disclosure Project or CDP), has committed to using 100% renewable electrical energy globally by 2025, which will allow eliminate 100% of its emissions from Scope 2. The Company is in the process of achieving that objective and has reiterated its commitment to RE100.

2.- By 2030, Grupo Bimbo commits to reduce 50% of its absolute Scope 1 emissions, starting from 2019 as the base year.

3.- By 2030, Grupo Bimbo commits to reduce 28% of its absolute Scope 3 emissions, starting from 2019 as the base year.

In addition to the above, Grupo Bimbo will include neutralization actions as part of its strategy through reforestation and carbon capture measures, which will be aligned with its regenerative agriculture initiative as part of its commitment to Zero Net Carbon Emissions.

“I am proud that Grupo Bimbo can continue to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and that it actively seeks ways to limit the effects of global warming. Our new sustainability platform has been defined with ambitious long-term goals that are closely linked to our purpose, to feed a better world. Grupo Bimbo is a company with a long history in social and environmental initiatives, by launching our new platform we are taking the necessary steps to fully integrate sustainability with our global business strategy and publicly commit to continue to positively impact the future “, according to Daniel Servitje, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Grupo Bimbo.
