Governor General Offers Words of Hope Amid Pandemic

The governor-general says Canadians can be hopeful as we ring in the new year, despite the current crisis from the COVID-19 pandemic.

In her first New Years message since becoming viceregal in July, Mary Simon says Canadians have shown resilience, compassion and adaptability despite a difficult year.

In the message, posted in English, French and Inuktitut, Simon says Canadians have inspired her to keep working and find better ways to help communities prosper.

She refers to a concept known in Inuktitut as “ajuinnata,” which means not just commitment, but putting that commitment into action.

The governor-general says that together, Canadians are fighting the pandemic, tackling climate change and “walking the path of reconciliation.”
