Govern de Pere Aragonès: Budgets after a convulsive decade

The usual thing is that a government has annual budgets. In Catalonia it has not been common for a decade. Only those of 2022, prepared under the presidency of Pere Aragones (CKD) and with James Giro (Junts) as head of the public accounts, have been launched in a timely manner: that is, they were approved before the end of the previous year so that they would come into force on January 1.

Quite a milestone if one takes into account that the last ones that were carried out in this way were those of 2010, with the socialists Joseph Montilla Y Antonio Castells, as ‘president’ and ‘conseller’ of Economy, respectively. The entire stage of the ‘procés’ or accounts have been extended or have been approved with the exercise already underway.

After the disbandment of social headquarters before and after 2017 referendum, there are only two Ibex 35 companies left with formal headquarters in Catalonia: Grifols and Fluidra. In any case, Barcelona has managed to establish itself as a pole of attraction for R&D centers and multinational excellence.

The impact of the war in Ukraine has been felt. Last year, the Catalan economy grew almost one point more than the Spanish average (5.8% compared to 5%). But in the first quarter of the current year, with a quarter-on-quarter rise of 0.1%, it registered a slower than average (0.3%). In any case, the Government estimates that this year Catalonia will grow by 4.9%, compared to 4.3% for the whole of Spain.
