Get up early in Aguascalientes?

With the PAN or for the PAN, Juan Antonio Martín del Campo seeks the candidacy for the governorship of Aguascalientes. Six years ago, from the mayor’s office of the hydrocalid capital, he tried to keep the nomination, but then Martín Orozco Sandoval was better positioned.

The blue and white party had already governed that entity in the Bajío, where bipartisanship has extended for two decades. Orozco Sandoval defeated the PRI Lorena Martínez in the constitutional contest and Tere Jiménez came to the presidency of Aguascalientes, who follows the same route as her predecessors and from that position she built her proposal for 2021, although confronted with the governor.

The definition of the PAN candidacy in Aguascalientes entered the decisive stage, three weeks ago, when the state councilors – in extraordinary session – agreed that the selection method would be direct appointment. The faction identified with the governor, who lost the vote, was fighting an internal election.

On November 24, the Permanent Commission of the National Council analyzed the case and recommended that they resort to the “use of measuring instruments, or if necessary, even the development of indicative processes (sic). The intervention of that partisan instance sought a “Urgent resolution”, given the exhaustion of the legal deadlines.According to the provisions of the Aguascalientes Electoral Institute, the political parties had to give notice of the method they would apply to select their candidates no later than November 26.

The day before, the PAN CEN ratified Francisco Javier Luévano as president of the state Steering Committee, who notified the electoral authority of the selection method, on Friday 26, and five days later led the delegation of the hydro-warm panismo that was presented at the National headquarters of the party to finalize a political agreement between the candidates for the nomination.

It was the last attempt – according to witnesses to the negotiations – at an impossible conciliation. From a failed early morning. The December 1 meeting was called for the federal deputy and the senator to know at the same time the results of the “indicative” survey, commissioned by the CEN of three polling houses, whose identity was reserved. The parties, it transpired, would order mirror measurements.

On the night of that Wednesday, Jiménez, Martín del Campo and Luévano were at the party headquarters, as well as a commission of notables from the hydro-warm panismo – which had served as facilitator of the agreements – and the representatives of the polling houses. Two of those present confirmed the report reproduced here, provided they were not identified.

The negotiations again ended in a breakdown – they described -: the applicants exchanged accusations about alleged interference in the lifting of the polls, which occurred on the last weekend of November. The former mayor claimed her opponent for some push polls in the sections where the questionnaires were raised.

One of the pollsters played a recording of a call from an alleged senator operator who proposed a meeting to “settle.” But with information provided by Raúl Alonso, leader of the Business Coordinating Council in Aguascalientes, the hydro-warm legislator claimed to be at the forefront of preferences and demanded to be recognized as the only candidate.

“Two sealed envelopes were left on the table with the results of the measurements. Their results were not made public ”, confirm the sources. After the meeting, without agreements, Martín del Campo uploaded a message to his social networks that was almost immediately disavowed by Luévano, who reported that the results would hardly be analyzed. “There are no conditions for someone to stand as a supposed winner,” he said.

On Friday 3, the state leader disqualified the polls and anticipated a final resolution on the method of selecting the standard-bearer. Yesterday, December 5, the national president of the PAN, Marko Cortés, was in Aguascalientes as a special guest at the national Youth Action meeting, where he heard complaints about the bias of the national leadership in the selection process.

In response, Cortés insisted that the candidate will not be defined by the polls, in a definition that heralds a storm. Tere Jiménez’s team is clear that there will be no agreement with Martín del Campo and those around the legislator believe that after these two weeks the PAN candidacy has escaped them. And what will Governor Orozco say?
