Gasly expects the first “clean weekend” of the AlphaTauri season in Spain

AlphaTauri currently sits seventh in the constructors’ championship with 16 points, but has not brought any significant improvements to the AT03 for this weekend’s race. Gasly says he is more concerned with the team having a smooth weekend than the lack of updates compared to their rivals.

“I haven’t really read much about which team brings what,” says Gasly. “It’s more like trying to look at ourselves over the last couple of weekends: what went right, what went wrong. How can we just max out because I feel like so far this season we haven’t really had a clean weekend?

“For various reasons, we never managed to get a clean qualifying, a clean race, no problems and maximize the points at the end of the day, which is what we have to do. In the midfield, we have six cars that can finish between seventh and tenth, so it is quite difficult, but at the same time it is a good challenge and puts more pressure on us to deliver at a higher level.

“Just like last year, sometimes we even performed at 98-99 percent of our potential and we were still there. This year, I don’t think we have that cushion compared to last year. We just need to be excellent every time, especially if we want to score points.”

Andretti is struggling with transition from BMW factory team, says Griffiths

Andretti Formula E team principal Roger Griffiths admits the team has had challenges adjusting to BMW’s loss of resources after the transition from a factory team to an independent one.

Andretti still uses a BMW powertrain, with a single homologation for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 seasons. However, the German marque dropped out of the series at the end of last year and since then the team has struggled to find similar performance, despite retaining some access to BMW’s engineering and simulation facilities.

The team started the 2022 season relatively strongly, with a third-place podium finish for Jake Dennis and a points finish for rookie Oliver Askew in the first Diriyah race. However, Dennis has struggled to score more than a handful of points and Askew hasn’t been able to find a competitive rhythm since.

“I think it’s up to us as a team that has made the transition from a factory BMW team to an independent team,” explained Griffiths. “We no longer have the resources that we used to have, we are learning more about how to operate the car on our own.

“With that learning there is always going to be one or two instances that don’t always work. I think we got stuck in Rome with the pace of the cars there and how it evolved and we just didn’t win enough. We reacted pretty well in Mexico City but ultimately there were other challenges that we faced there that slowed us down a bit. But we have been making progress each time. So every time we’ve come out of a race, we’ve understood the shortcomings that maybe we’ve had and how to work on them and make improvements.”

Hadjar “really impressive” says Hitech F3 boss

Hitech GP founder Oliver Oakes says he is impressed by how quickly Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar has adapted to the team so far in this year’s FIA F3 championship.

The 17-year-old is part of the Red Bull Junior Team and is competing in his first season in the FIA F3 championship. Hadjar finished third in this year’s Formula Regional Asian Series with the team before moving on to the FIA F3 championship, where he sits fifth after four races having won the first round in Bahrain.

“I think Isack has been a bit of a surprise,” said Hitech boss Oakes. “Last year we had two really talented rookies and it was evident to us that they were going to be really good, finding their place. What surprises us with Isack is that he has found his place much faster.

“I think what surprised me the most, more than his results, is how seriously he takes it, how much he studies with his engineer and that’s really nice to see at that age. Because normally that’s the battle, really, as a team: try to make them realize that at the F3 and F2 level you can have all the talent you want, but all the details matter. His track positioning, warming up his tyres: it’s all very difficult with 30 cars and I think how he’s handled it so far has been really impressive.
