Fundraiser Continues for 19-Year-Old Knife Attack Survivor at Her Alta Vista Home

The crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for Catherine Ready, the 19-year-old survivor of a knife attack at her Alta Vista home, has exceeded its goal.

As of Monday night, $57,782 had been raised for Catherine. Her mother, Anne-Marie, and her 15-year-old sister, Jasmine, were killed in the June 27 attack.

The money will be given to Catherine, a uOttawa student, to help with her expenses and recovery.

Co-organizer Caroline Poirier posted a thank you to supporters on the GoFundMe page.

“Family, friends and those affected greatly appreciate the generosity you are showing us. Because we received so much support, we decided to raise the goal. The next few months will be very hard for the family and the support is greatly appreciated.”

The other organizer, Naomi Eberhard, has previously said that it will be difficult for Catherine to start work and study right away. After such physical, psychological and emotional trauma, “the essentials of life will be a challenge.

Joshua Graves, a 21-year-old neighbor of the Ready family on Anoka Street, was shot to death by police outside his home while stabbing Catherine. Anne-Marie and Jasmine had died and were found nearby by the police.

When police arrived in response to a 911 call, Graves refused to drop his knife, so they opened fire, according to the account from the province’s Special Investigations Unit.

Catherine was taken to the hospital to be treated for serious injuries, including a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

The double homicide occurred three days after Graves was released on bail on charges of criminal harassment, assault and sexual assault in connection with an incident with another teenage girl.

Donors on the GoFundMe page left words of support for Catherine.

“I cried when I first heard about this story,” one donor wrote. “The tragedy of two lives disappearing like this and the survivor having to move on in this new reality is heartbreaking and unfair.”

“Having two daughters, this story hurts me a lot,” wrote another. “One of my daughters was friends with Jasmine and it has been difficult every day. I can say with certainty that Ottawa will shine and support Catherine in any way possible.”

Friends of the Douvris karate school organized the fundraiser. Anne-Marie and Jasmine trained there and recently received their black belts.

Anne-Marie Ready, 50, was a trade commissioner at Global Affairs Canada. Jasmine was a student at Franco-Cité High School and had just finished 10th grade.
