Fundesplai opens new facilities with an exhibition on sustainable food

  • The expansion of its headquarters, up to 22,000 square meters, will allow the entity to respond to educational and social challenges

The Catalan Leisure Foundation (Fundesplai) inaugurates this Saturday the expansion of its facilities in the neighborhood Sant Cosme del Prat de Llobregat. An ambitious project that started in the middle of the pandemic and which has meant doubling the surface of its headquarters to 22,000 square meters. The equipment will allow the entity to advance towards its service objective: to reach 300,000 people with its educational and social programs. And the first great activity of this new stage is the exhibition ‘Eat, Act, Impact’, an invitation to reflect and act to achieve a healthy and sustainable diet. “It is a call to action. Food is the key point in the challenge of a sustainable future“, highlights Jordi Simó, member of the Board of Trustees of Fundesplai.

The exhibition, which occupies 1,500 square meters and begins with an impressive immersive video, wants to ask the visitor about what you eat and what effects your diet has on the health of the planet. Thus, a tour of five spaces is proposed that address issues such as the waste of food, excessive consumption of packaging, especially plastic, and food ultra-processed and guidelines are given on how to move towards a diet that does not endanger the planet.

These guidelines are summarized in these few steps: reduce the food we throw away, consume locally grown and sustainably grown products, and reduce the consumption of animal protein, ultra-processed and packaging. The Director of Content and Innovation of Fundesplai, Carles Xifra, emphasizes that in the hands of each person is the power to “join the change” and “create a positive impact” for the future of the planet.

The idea is that visitors can combine the exhibition with a series of activities in the Llobregat Delta, such as visiting the Parc Agrari del Baix Llobregat, the natural spaces of the delta, or the Center for the Recovery of Marine Animals (CRAM). Through the web you can buy tickets and organize a tailor-made visit, choosing the activities you prefer. The exhibition can be visited until July 31, 2023 and 200,000 people are expected to pass through it.

More educational and social programs

With this expansion, the Fundesplai headquarters adds three new equipment: the current hostel goes from 175 to 225 rooms, a training center with 14 classrooms and a 4,500-square-meter multi-purpose building that is where the exhibition has been organized. The project has involved an investment of 12.5 million euros and the works have been carried out in just over a year. In a few weeks a Park adjacent, 1.7 hectares, which will recreate the ecosystem of the Llobregat Delta.
