It’s been almost a week since the truck convoy rolled into protest vaccine mandates in the country’s capital, and if social media is any indication, the people of Ottawa are fed up.

Six days after the occupation of Ottawa’s streets by a so-called “freedom” convoy, residents express their growing frustration and anger with the blockade, which has let the city down since Friday and brought businesses to a standstill.

Opponents began a movement of their own, against the truck drivers, the reaction of the city and the Ottawa police. Meantime, a petition with more than 26,000 signatures circulating on change.org and demanding that the police evict the convoy.

Plans for a counter-protest have spread widely on social media, with two separate plans developed on Reddit and Instagram for the coming weekend.

A second truck convoy protest is planned for Toronto and the GTA this weekend at Queen’s Park, while more Ottawa convoy supporters will descend on the capital again this weekend. Toronto Mayor John Tory issued a statement on Thursday in which he wrote that while he supports the right of Canadians to protest peacefully, he “absolutely wants” to be clear that the Toronto Police Department has his support for taking appropriate action. take to plan for the demonstration. Tory also said the protest could not block the hospitals in the area.

The frustration of Ottawa residents is palpable. The protesters, who have been topping the horns of their trucks on an almost constant basis since their arrival in the city, have largely disrupted daily life for those living and working in the capital. Residents have repeatedly questioned Ottawa police’s position to take a non-confrontational response to the protest, which lasted nearly a week.

GoFundMe froze funds raised for “Freedom convoy” truck drivers as the fundraiser surpassed the $ 10 million mark this week.

“This fundraiser is currently interrupted and is being reviewed to ensure that it complies with our terms of service and applicable laws and regulations,” reads a warning at the top of the donations page.

The fundraiser in support of the protesting vaccine mandates is now the second largest in Canada, following a campaign created after the 2018 Humboldt Broncos bus crash.
