From the Winter Palace to recommending vegetables

There is a fatal fate in vocational totalitarian political leaders. If they do not obtain all the power, they end up as mere and irrelevant gatherings of the exhausting Spanish political situation.

I remember an encounter with Little Benegas at the Cía Boga bar in San Sebastián, in June 2015, just three months before he passed away. We knew each other by the San Sebastian peasantry and by having coincided in the Congress of Deputies during several legislatures.

We had a long conversation, in which we toured our respective experiences in politics. His confidences were sincere and heartfelt, typical of a person who knew they had little time to live.

In relation to Guipúzcoa, Txiki Benegas pointed out: “You have to see, Guillermo, these from EH Bildu. After almost 40 years of assassinations, extortion and terror, with 1,000 dead behind them, four years ago, the Provincial Council and almost all the municipalities (including that of San Sebastián) have obtained all power in the province. And, apart from placing their people everywhere, what political project have they developed? An insane garbage collection program ”.

This anecdote is relevant due to the reduction of personal and political objectives of the Spanish extreme left when it has reached the government of the Nation. Leaders like Pablo Iglesias Turrión, who expressed the horizon of the conquest of the Winter Palace as an imaginary transcript of the murder of the Tsar Nicholas II and the obtaining of absolute power, collide with the limits of the Constitution and the powerful commitments acquired by the Kingdom of Spain as a member of the European Union.

Reality imposes its limits and a leader of the Communist Party appears, Mr. Alberto Garzon, whose political action has turned out to be as stunted as that of EH Bildu. The PCE, with 100 years of history, with enormous political influence in power during the Civil War and in opposition to the Franco regime, deploys its project in democracy: a recommendation of preferential consumption of vegetables.

Anyone who knows the culture of the left knows that, more than a party, the Communist Party was a Church with its pope, cardinals and bishops. The deification of the communist organization as the Supreme Being Party expressed it Dolores Ibárruri, La Pasionaria, in this sentence, frontispiece of many militants for decades: “Every communist, wherever he is, in the factory, in illegal work, in the guerrilla detachment, in jail, must always think that he is the Party, that they see the Party in him, and he has the duty to be worthy of this status as a Party member ”.

Another sample of total dedication of the communist militant to the Party with a capital letter was this phrase from Santiago Carrillo: “The life of the communists does not end in the place of torture, it does not end even in front of the firing squads. The life of the communists is the Party and the Party, above Franco’s terror, always comes out victorious ”.

The long-suffering left-wing opposition activists during the dictatorship could not imagine a more funny end to the political action of the PCE than that of Minister Garzón, in the National Government since 2019.

In the 90s of the last century, Santiago Carrillo also became a radio talk show host on the SER network, marking a path that Pablo Iglesias has followed. Speaking in the media has a boring component, but it is much less dangerous and costly for the taxpayer than the exercise of power from the Government.

Pablo Iglesias Turrión has made numerous references to his admiration for Lenin, Stalin, Fidel Castro and Keys. I do not know if he has mentioned any other liberticide and genocidal. I have for me that the resignation of Pablo Iglesias as vice president of the Government is based on the understanding that it is preferable to earn money for speaking in the media than to be a vase for a cabinet in a parliamentary monarchy in which he cannot display the entire cluster of barbarities typical of totalitarian regimes.

Pessimists about the decline of the West and the demoliberal system may find it comforting to compare these early years of the 21st century with those of the 20th century. By 1921 the First World War had already occurred, in 1917 the Bolsheviks had staged a coup in Russia and the following year centuries-old kingdoms and empires fell.

In our time, the extreme left, instead of taking the Winter Palace, is content with recommending the consumption of chickpeas or hitting on the radio.
