Fourth wave of Covid-19 is already in the decline phase in Mexico: López-Gatell

The Deputy Secretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo Lopez-Gatellassured this Tuesday that Mexico is already in the descent phase of the fourth wave of Covid-19and it is expected to maintain this decline in the coming weeks.

During the morning conference of the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorthe Deputy Secretary reported that there was a 31% reduction in estimated cases of the disease, in the fifth week of the year, which begins.

In addition, he added, the hospital profession national 65% compared to the maximum figure recorded; also reduced the number temporary work disabilities and the percent positivity.

López-Gatell reports that the percentage of occupancy of fan beds to care for patients with coronavirus at national level is 29%, while the profession of common beds it is 47 percent. He said in 25 of the 32 entities there is already a downward trend in hospital occupancy.

On the other hand, the federal official said that the Covid-19 deaths continues with an upward trend. He recalled that this phase of the epidemic was marked by unvaccinated“Whoever comes to the hospital and loses his life is most likely a person who has not been vaccinated or has not received the full vaccination schedule,” he said.

He said that these signs indicate that we are the culmination of the fourth wave of Covid-19 in Mexicodominated by the Omicron variantand we are already in the decline phase, “what is expected is that this decline phase will continue in the coming weeks, possibly at a rate similar to the increase, to the extent that the Omicron variant also gives shorter periods of illness”, he gestured.

On the other hand, he reiterated that the opening of schools does not mean a rapid spread of Covid-19, as it was during the December holiday period when the fourth wave of coronavirus.

However, he said, “since mid-January, this reduction in cases has also been seen in children and adolescents who have been active in schools,” he said.

With reference to Vaccination planthe deputy secretary said Mexico is accumulating 166 million 102 210 doses used in 83.6 million people, leaving only 6% to complete its vaccination schedule.

López-Gatell assured that 105% of healthcare professionals already have their booster dose, indicating that this high percentage is due to the fact that some members of this group have applied their booster by age group and not because they are healthcare professionals.

In terms of the application of reinforcement to older adults, the progression is 63% and 19% in people between 40 and 59 years old.

As of this Monday, Mexico has amassed 4 million 942,590 confirmed cases of covid-19 and 306,091 deaths.
