Fossil energy sources will remain predominant until 2060: Rocío Nahle

The holder of Energy, Dew nahle, closed the Mexican Petroleum Congress —Which was carried out in person at Monterrey, New Lion, after almost two years of cancellations of all the events in the sector— with a message: although the future points towards a greater use of renewable sources of energy, the fossil fuels they will dominate the productive economy for the next four decades in the world.

Therefore, the country must continue to focus on oil extraction and production given the conditions of an exporting country of manufactures that exist in Mexico, since this is today the route to boost growth after the effects of the health contingency of the Covid-19.

“Although in 2040 we will have the technology to produce clean energy for cars and everything that moves, it takes 20 years for the technology to be perfected. So we have oil for a while and we shouldn’t demonize it on the contrary; we are a fortunate country to have this resource and to use it, it is very important, “said the official.

In addition, he recalled that on December 2 the last meeting of the year will be held between member countries of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and unaffiliated producers (group called OPEC +) in which Mexico will participate with its position of maintaining current production, above 1.7 million barrels per day, and with the policy of increasing it to 2 million barrels per day by 2024.

Meanwhile, the two dominant fractions in OPEC +, led by Arabia in terms of exports, are expected to Russia Regarding the production of unaffiliated countries, agree to close the year with a global production of 100 million barrels per day, to discuss further increases and analyze the price dynamics next year.

For Mexico to comply with the commitments that it will establish as a guest country to the OPEC + meeting, it will be necessary for the State company, Mexican oil (Pemex), continue dominance in the hydrocarbon extraction, which does not imply major changes in the current status of production, since out of 110 contracts awarded after the 2015 reform, only less than a dozen produce crude oil and with this not even 2% of current production is achieved.

“We are hearing about clean energy and it is part of a technological development but today all electricity is based on diesel gas, coal. Humanity is still with a percentage of fossil products. The Petroleum it will be required until the minimum 2050; humanity is going to require it. OPEC recently extended it to 2060, ”Nahle said.

In her presentation, the official explained that the new Dos Bocas refinery, in Tabasco, will be ready for July next year, fulfilling the presidential mandate. In its construction, 1,933 million cubic meters of national concrete have been used so far, while the metallic structure has required 148,000 tons of materials, in addition to 3,270 million meters of linear pipe, 212,000 tons of steel from reinforcement and 16,349 million meters of electric cable, in addition to the fact that of the 95,000 pieces of equipment that the refinery will have, 76,000 are being manufactured in Mexico.

Finally, Nahle reiterated that corruption in the sector is being fought, a fundamental condition to boost its growth.

“We are working to eliminate corruption because this costs us a lot, the country, society, companies and it should not be. It must be eradicated. Every day we are working to eliminate it and have a new energy policy, “he said.
