Fonatur will buy a hotel to host officials who collaborate in the construction of the Mayan Train

The National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur) seeks to buy for 47.7 million the Hotel Axkan Arte in Tulum, Quintana Roo, to accommodate brigadistas (public officials) linked to the construction of the Mayan Train and reduce costs for the use of other hotels, although they will be charged “a recovery cost per accommodation consisting of half the current rate for evening”.

The property, located a few minutes from the center of Tulum, It is four years old, four levels, 25 parking spaces without a roof and as profitable units: four suites, 18 double rooms, six single rooms, two penthouses.

It also has a restaurant, pizzeria-bar and swimming pool with palapa.

It is expected that the resources for the purchase will be from the budget assigned for this year and the objective of the same is: enter into the purchase-sale contract of the Hotel Axkan Arte to be used as logistical support for public servants that make up the brigades of the Maya Trend in the area and will later be integrated into the Integrally Sustainable Center in Tulum to be used as a business unit.

The fund seeks with this operation “to have an instrument to promote tourist activity in the area, given the expected increase in the influx of national and foreign visitors once the Mayan Train begins its operation.”

Before defining the acquisition, staff from the Fonatur considered the possibility of building a 30-room building; however, the cost of building a hotel was higher than the cost of purchasing the property.

Reduce costs

As a justification before the Secretariat of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), the Fonatur, led by Rogelio Jiménez Pons, argued that one of the main administrative problems they face, together with their subsidiaries, for the construction of the Mayan Train is the expense it makes for travel expenses and transportation of the public servants who are part of of the brigades.

“Most of the brigade members live in areas other than those assigned to them in their commissions, they need to stay near the place where they carry out their activities. Given the tourist vocation of Tulum, hotel rates in the area are high, so the brigade members have serious limitations to stay in a decent place, “he explained.
