Flow of tourists to Quintana Roo, still unaffected by the Omicron variant

Cancun, QR. For the moment, Quintana Roo does not have any restrictions for the entry or exit of foreign visitors, although given the volatility of the Covid-19 pandemic due to the new Omicron variant, the situation could change, reported the person in charge of the local Tourism Secretariat , Andrés Aguilar Becerril, who insisted that if everything remains as expected, the entity would close the year with high occupancy levels for the high season at the end of the year.

He specified that any extraordinary measure to reinforce the sanitary protocols that are applied at the Cancun International Airport is not the responsibility of the state authorities, but that it will correspond to the federal authorities what, at the time, he said, should be applied for the entry or departure of international tourists from the air terminal of this city.

For the moment, the usual protocols in the terminal are maintained, such as temperature taking, application of disinfectant gel, mandatory use of face masks, raising random questionnaires to passengers, among others.

Meanwhile, Benjamín Jiménez, executive director of Strategic Planning of the Tourism Promotion Council of Quintana Roo, assured that between December 1 of this year and March 31, 2022, 6.5 million airplane seats are scheduled to the International Airport of Cancun, distributed in more than 160 national and international air routes, 30% higher than that registered in the same period 2018-2019.

However, he acknowledged that these forecasts may be modified depending on the behavior of the pandemic and the eventual restrictions that may be imposed by the different issuing markets of tourism to Quintana Roo.

He confirmed that the United States remains the main source of tourists to Quintana Roo with 3.7 million travelers between January and October of this year, which is practically 46% of the total number of visitors from the American Union that have been received at the national level, and that at least in the case of the state they represent a higher volume than that registered in the same period of 2019, that is, more North Americans are arriving than before the pandemic.

Reservations

The president of the Tulum Hotel Association, David Ortiz Mena, also confirmed that so far they do not have notices of restrictions or cancellations of hotel reservations derived from the appearance of the new strain of Covid-19, so the closure forecasts of the year are still very high as peaks above 90% in occupancy at least during the second half of December.

Meanwhile, the governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín González, said that it is a fact that it is necessary to be prepared “again” for the arrival of this virus, “which worries us all, derived from the 100 cases identified in South Africa, some other cases in Eastern Europe, in addition to the fact that Canada and some places in the United States are already being talked about ”.
