First major snowfall of the season: updates and reactions from all the GTA

Toronto-area residents woke up to slightly more snow than expected Sunday morning.

The GTA was expected to receive 2 to 4 cm of snow, but saw 3 to 6 cm and areas north of the city received more due to the lake effect.

On twitter, #onstorm it was trending Sunday morning when people took to the platform to talk about the storm.

Twitter user Desert Sandbox reminded people to put on snow tires in the middle of the snowfall.

On the topic of driving, Twitter user Kevin Proulx shared a meme that talked about the tendency of people to forget how to drive in the weather.

It is not only a first for humans, but also for the “best friend of man”. Twitter user Dapper Tux shared a photo of his pup exploring the snow for the first time.

The OPP’s GTA Traffic Twitter account shared that there were multiple collisions on the 400 series roads, including three on Highway 404 near Elgin Mills Road in Markham.

York Regional Police reported that one of the collisions on Highway 400 had passengers trapped in a vehicle.

In an email, a spokesperson for the city of Toronto reported who are ready with the team to handle this early snowfall. They began deploying anti-ice trucks, which spray brine to help reduce salt use and prevent snow from sticking to the road, on Saturday afternoon.

“The plows are ready to go on the main roads if the accumulated snow reaches 5 cm. Plows travel on expressways when accumulation reaches 2.5 cm, ”the city said. “Residential streets are being salty and would be plowed if the snow reaches 8 cm of accumulation, which the forecasts do not predict at this time.”
