Firefighters Fight Suspicious South Calgary Wildfire Along Macleod Trail – Calgary | The Canadian News

Fire crews were called to a fire at a south Calgary restaurant early Monday morning that fire officials say is considered suspicious by nature.

The Calgary Fire Department was called to the area of 96 Avenue and Macleod Trail SW around 6:25 a.m.

Battalion Chief Keith Stahl of the CFD said someone living in a nearby residential tower received a 911 call and said they saw smoke and flames coming from the building: Ginger Beef Bistro House.

“Upon arrival, they had dense smoke, heavy flames at the rear of the building, mainly concentrated outside. That prompted the call for a second alarm to bring in more resources, due to the proximity of an exposure just south of the building, ”Stahl said as crews continued to fight the fire just after 8 am.

“The crews immediately began to attack the fire and were able to keep it confined to the building of origin and continue to attack that fire at this time,” he explained.

Due to the number of flames coming from the building, Stahl said crews were unable to enter. Two air units were being used to help put out the fire.

“We concentrated an elevated master stream attack, so we hit the fire with large volumes of water from the outside with those aerial devices and we also have crews working around the perimeter just to keep it contained.”

Stahl said they have not received any reports of injuries and that the building appeared to be vacant when firefighters arrived.

“We don’t have any information that would make us believe that someone would be there at this time of day. As for the operation of the business, I cannot speculate on that at this time. “

The cause of the fire is unknown. The CFD said it is considered suspicious and arson investigators will be called in later Monday to investigate.

The fire is believed to have started at the rear of the building.

It is not known if the restaurant was in operation. Witnesses in the area say they have not seen any activity at the restaurant for some time.

The restaurant’s voicemail said it operates Tuesday through Sunday, and the website directs people to order from the Country Hills location in north Calgary.

The extent and cost of the damages are not yet known.
