Fire under control in southern Spain

In southern Spain, the devastating blaze that killed a firefighter last week and evacuated 2,600 people in the Malaga region is now under control.

“The rain that has been falling for hours has been the best ally” of the firefighters, explained in a Tweet the president of the Andalusia region, Juanma Moreno.

This giant fire has already devastated more than 8,000 hectares in the Sierra Bermeja massif.

About 500 firefighters as well as about fifty water bombers were mobilized to extinguish it. Since Sunday, 260 soldiers from a specialized army unit have come to lend them a hand at the request of the local authorities.

This summer, devastating fires fueled by the heatwave affected several Mediterranean countries such as Greece, Italy, Turkey and Algeria.
