Fire burns four acres of a cornfield near Richmond

A fire has scorched four acres of a cornfield near Richmond.

Ottawa Fire says firefighters responded to reports of a large grass fire on Shea Road, between Brownlee Road and Garvin Road, at approximately 1 pm Wednesday.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they found approximately four acres of a cornfield burning.

“Firefighters are working hard to contain it,” Ottawa Fire said on Twitter. “As of right now they are making great headway. Perimeter is okay now, working on the middle ground.”

The fire comes as Ottawa sees hot and dry conditions. It has not rained in Ottawa in seven days.

The Ottawa Fire Service has issued a ban on open air fires in the city of Ottawa.

Campfires, brush piles, and wood burning outdoor fireplaces are not permitted during a ban.
