Feijóo is still willing to negotiate the CGPJ despite Sánchez’s alliance with Bildu

The deputies and leaders of the PP denounced this Thursday in the corridors that Pedro Sanchez “he has chosen Bildu again”, “the heirs of ETA”, before Alberto Núñez Feijóo. The Conservatives, who voted ‘no’ to the royal decree, had offered the Government to support the validation in exchange for some conditions, including the assumption of a large part of the PP’s fiscal plan. The popular also flatly rejected that the Executive has modified the norm to be able to include EH Bildu in the commission of reserved expenses, where the director of the National Intelligence Center, Paz Esteban, to give explanations about the ‘Catalangate‘. “If Bildu is above the interests of Spanish families, it is not up to me to explain it, but it is up to me to denounce it,” Feijóo declared in Santiago de Compostela.

Despite these circumstances, Feijóo wants to reach State agreements with the Executive, specifically in the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), which has been in office for more than three years, and of the Court Constitutional. “Some things do not condition the others,” stressed sources from the PP leadership. The new leader hopes to be able to reach agreements with the Executive to make a difference with his predecessor, Pablo Casado, who vetoed the updating of the judiciary one of the pillars of his opposition work.

Pons (PP) and Bolaños (Government) will be in charge of negotiating the updating of the judiciary and the Constitutional Court

Feijóo has chosen the deputy secretary of Institutional of the party, Esteban Gonzalez Pons as the main interlocutor for this mission that, on behalf of the Government, will continue to be led by the Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolanos. Both spoke last Monday, when it became known that Pons was the person designated by the PP for this task, and both agree in wanting to maintain “the discretion” from your contacts.

The Executive has asked to update before June 12 the judiciary, because the Constitutional it must renew four of its members in that month: two must elect them to the Executive and another two to the CGPJ. However, as the March 2021 reform of the Government prevents the judiciary from approving appointments if the mandate has expired, the renewal of the Constitutional Court, which now has a conservative majority, could not be carried out (at least without controversy). The PP and the Government could undo this mess with the update of the CGPJ. At this time, the will of the two main parties is to negotiate. On the calendar they have marked in red the Andalusian elections on June 19, circumstance that they will take into account to decide when they are most interested in reaching the pact.

Moncloa sources also hope that the PP agrees to approve the reform of article 49 of the Constitution (to erase the allusion to the “physically, sensory and mentally handicapped”), the elimination of the requested vote to facilitate the political participation of Spaniards residing abroad and return to the anti-transfuguism pact.
