Faced with productive demand, Puebla’s textile industry needs to increase personnel

Puebla, Pue. The textile industry is having a hard time keeping permanent staff in the factories, despite the fact that the sector has resumed production with more intensity due to the high demand for products in the United States this year.

Carlos Couttolenc López, president of the Chamber of the Textile Industry (Citex)Puebla-Tlaxcala region, commented that this staff turnover is not good for companies, because they must be training each employee to adjust to production processes, a situation that implies an expense.

He indicated that the situation is difficult because the new generations have a different concept of the processes in the industry, to which it is often difficult for them to adapt and they end up leaving.

He acknowledged that this year a little more than 600 jobs have been recoveredwhen the loss in the two years of the Covid-19 pandemic were 4,000 positions due to the low activity that there was.

The chamber leader said that salary is another factor that influences the turnover problem, despite the fact that in the Puebla textile plants the payment is higher than the minimum wage and that it is competitive with respect to industries in the sector from other states.

He indicated that it is difficult for them to find personnel for heavy loader positions, which are less technical and where there has been more turnover in the last two years.

He stressed that the textile industry is at its maximum operational capacity, which is why they are looking for more personnel to be in line with the rate of production that is fostering abroad.

Carlos Couttolenc López indicated that those who were involved in this industry, which was forced to stop with the start of the pandemic for more than five months, decided to enroll in other areas to self-employ and never returned.

However, he recognized that women have an important role in the textile sector, representing 70% of the workforce, which has been growing and is more qualified for quality issues.

The textile leader hopes that this year they will be able to compensate for this problem of high personnel turnover, because they predict a year of greater economic recovery and that more personnel will be needed to fulfill the commitments.
