Expectation on La Palma for the volcano activity stop

The La Palma volcano has not emitted a sign of tremor or activity for more than twelve hours. The Canary Islands Volcanological Institute (Involcan) has reported early this Tuesday that “since 9:00 pm yesterday (Monday), there is no volcanic tremor in Cumbre Vieja.”

However, the Involcan scientists point out that “this does not imply a termination of the eruption” and recall that “sometimes its cessation has been followed by a new increase in activity. This is the longest interval without tremor since the beginning of the eruption”.

Seismic spike since midnight

On the other hand, the National Geographic Institute (IGN) has located since last midnight and until 08.26 hours about 58 earthquakes on La PalmaTherefore, there has been a rebound in earthquakes in relation to the previous morning when three were registered.

At this midnight the most prominent earthquake is the one that occurred at 06.39 hours in Fuencaliente, of magnitude 3.1 and at a depth of 11 kilometers.

In this sense, the latest report of the National Security Directorate (DSN) notes that seismicity remains low at intermediate depths and the number of earthquakes at depths greater than 20 kilometers remains very low.

The stable trend that the volcano presented throughout the past week was altered in the last hours. On Sunday an intense eruptive pulse was confirmed that yesterday afternoon was enlivened with a strong expulsion of ash, lava and pyroclasts.

Scientists who monitor volcanic activity in the Old Summit of La Palma are now studying whether these episodes represent a change in the evolution of the emergency or are only specific peaks.

The week began this Monday with the municipalities of Aridanea Valley with rarefied environment, with a thick layer of gases expelled by the tireless Cumbre Vieja volcano that each day provides for the around 30,000 people who live in The Plains of Aridane, El Paso and Tazacorte a new surprise.
