“Exceptional” heat is coming

The first heat wave of the season will hit most of Quebec this week, with temperatures even reaching 30 degrees Celsius in some places.

“Quebecers will start complaining about the heat again after complaining about the coldness just four or five days ago,” laughs meteorologist Gilles Brien.

An “exceptional” heat sequence will extend to the entire south of the province this week. Friday, the mercury will climb to 30°C in Montreal, while it was 20°C for the first time only on May 1.

Quebec, for its part, will be able to enjoy a temperature of around 25°C towards the end of the week.

You have to go back to last August to find a sequence of the genre.

No rain on the horizon

“All of Quebec is in a bubble, a very vast anticyclone that protects it not only from the depressions on the east coast, but also from those in Ontario,” said Mr. Brien.

This heat wave will be very dry.

“Farmers are waiting for the rain, but not a drop will fall for 10 days,” says Mr. Brien.

Forest fires

The Society for the Protection of Forests Against Fire (SOPFEU) notably published on Saturday an open fire ban valid in a large part of the province.

“We are having a very busy weekend and the hot weather has not even started,” laments SOPFEU spokeswoman Mélanie Morin, who specifies that all the fires listed were of human causes.

“Sunny weather, with a bit of wind, no rain and very, very low relative humidity is the perfect recipe. If there is the slightest spark, it will burn, ”she says.

Moreover, a major fire in the woods of the Golf de l’île Montréal, in the east of the metropolis, raged on Sunday.

Climatic changes

In recent years, heat waves have been occurring more and more in the month of May, notes Mr. Brien.

“The climate is warming up and the first place you see it is in summer. Temperatures are above normal,” he said.
