Bill Glen loved his dogs, his Harley, and making people laugh.

The veteran Windsor police officer who made headlines after being shot in the line of duty in the 1970s died on November 11 at the age of 78.

Glen and his late partner, Const. William Pheby, both were shot while chasing a gunman in 1973. More than a hundred shotgun pellets remained on Glen’s body decades later, when he recalled the experience in a Star 2019 story.

How many times have I thought about that night? I couldn’t count that high. A lot, ”Glen said at the time.

Dorothy Glen, Bill’s wife of 27 years, said her husband loved his job as a police officer, especially the year he spent doing undercover work. He was a member of the Blue Knights police motorcycle group and served with the Windsor police from 1964 to 1993.

“He never wanted to do anything else,” said Dorothy.

In retirement, Dorothy said that her husband loved to ride his Harley. The couple spent winters in Florida, where Bill traveled with a GoPro camera strapped to his helmet and sent the videos to friends who were weathering the cold.

“I’m not really sure, if I had to choose between me and the Harley, which would it be,” said Dorothy laughing.

Another of Bill’s passions was his dogs, Glen said. When the couple first met, Bill had a Pekingese – “That was kind of funny, this tall, big guy walking the Pekingese,” said Dorothy – but later, the couple adopted greyhound dogs, often older dogs delivered by other owners. Bill loved them because they are “big TV junkies” who love to sleep.

Dorothy said Bill was known for sitting outside in the summer with pockets full of dog treats for passing dogs; every pet in the neighborhood knew where Bill lived.

“He was a true animal lover,” she said.

Dorothy said her friends will remember Bill as a man with a “relentless sense of humor” who loved to make people laugh. But more than that, it also brought out the humor in others.

“He made fun of all the neighbors,” said Dorothy. “A neighbor of ours in Florida … told me she’s going to miss it.”

“I think I became a bit like him, found myself joking, like ‘I can’t believe I just said that.’ Bill surprised her with flowers at least once a month, just because.

Bill Glen is survived by his wife, Dorothy, two stepchildren, three grandchildren, and many other loving friends and family.
