European Super League spent millions without being launched

The project of the European Super League He was born and died in less than 48 hours, but left in his wake an expense of 4.5 million dollars that were delivered to law firms and agencies without the tournament being officially created.

According to information from Bloomberg and Front Office Sports, this project, which involves the participation of 12 elite teams from Europe (from Spain, England and Italy) delivered said amount to a total of 12 conglomerates of international lawyers, whose function would be to protect the interests of the new tournament and its legal framework, although it was scrapped long before it became a reality.

Recipients of the 4.5 million were the London-based law firm Clifford Chance LLP, which received 2.2 million for legal work; New York-based Latham & Watkins LLP, which made $ 1.4 million in fees; six public relations agencies and two media companies that received almost 907,000; as well as two more credit rating agencies that split a total of $ 391,000.

The teams involved in this project were called Big Six de Inglaterra, made up of Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham; the Spanish Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid; as well as the Italians Juventus, Milan and Inter.

It should be noted that both the UEFA, as the FIFA They threw out the project in less than 48 hours, arguing that they would respond with the immediate expulsion of said clubs from any local and international tournament endorsed by those organizations, for which they would have been left out of leagues such as the Premier and also of the Champions League.

For their part, the six English teams that joined had agreed a fee of $ 31.1 million in June with the Premier League. Along with Atlético de Madrid, the island’s clubs were among the first to withdraw from the European Super League project and apologize to their fans, who violently protested their intention to leave the Champions League.

On the other hand, the Spanish clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona, together with the Italian club Juventus, filed a legal claim in October against the UEFA and the FIFA, claiming that the two organizations violate European competition law by acting as regulators and participants who benefit from their oversight. All three continue to advocate for a concept in the style of the Superliga and even the Merengue president, Florentino Pérez, has highlighted in various spaces the viability of continuing with the project.

Although it was six months after the publication of this idea, the millions of dollars spent before the launch of the Super League are an indication of its long development and projected potential, despite the speed with which it was dissolved. The tournament got to specify the financial support of the firm JPMorgan in terms of loans, but so far it has been held back and except for the three aforementioned clubs (Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus), the others have not shown intention to continue it.
