Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) received a 911 call around 2:11 p.m. Wednesday reporting a fuel or oil spill in the area of 164A Avenue and 45 Street.

Brittany Lewchuk, an EFRS communications advisor, said a nearby Jiffy Lube was reported to dump about 1,000 liters of used oil down a drain. The oil then entered a nearby stormwater pond, Lewchuk added.

EFRS teams, including the hazardous materials team, arrived on site at 2:15 pm and continue to assist with cleanup.

Lewchuk said EPCOR is also on the scene.

EPCOR told Postmedia that they received a report of the oil release in the 50th Street and 165th Avenue area around 12:15 p.m. Some of the oil entered the area’s stormwater system, but EPCOR is not sure how much. oil entered the system.

EPCOR’s drainage operations and environmental teams were dispatched and are on site.

“We have installed barriers at the Brintnell Stormwater Management Facility to mitigate the impact of any oil that may have entered the facility,” EPCOR said in an emailed statement. “At this time, it is unknown if there is any impact on the facility.”

A private contractor is facilitating the cleanup and the release has been reported to Alberta Environment.
