Engineers sign essential services agreement

The Professional Association of Government Engineers of Quebec (APIGQ) announced Tuesday that it has signed an agreement on essential services with the Ministry of Transport.

On an indefinite strike since April 22, the members of the APIGQ are demanding a salary catch-up to attract experienced engineers and strengthen engineering expertise in the public sector.

Under the terms of this new agreement, the engineers are committed to ensuring the necessary safety inspections of all infrastructures, including new structures.

“The MTQ is not in a position to guarantee that the structures under its responsibility are safe for the population if it cannot carry out the general inspections planned”, indicated the APIGQ in a press release.

Regarding infrastructures that present an imminent danger, as was revealed for the Pierre-Laporte bridge, the few engineers with the required experience “will be rehabilitated to full-time work”, recalls the union of engineers.
