Barrie – Springwater – Oro-Medonte MP-elect Doug Shipley said he was “disappointed” with the overall election results and hoped that the Conservative Party would form a government.

“We are exactly where we were after spending $ 610 million,” Shipley said, referring to the cost of the early elections in the face of the pandemic that were called on August 15.

“I was also disappointed with the call, because it was difficult to get people to commit during the summer. A lot of people were on vacation. “

Barrie-Innisfil MP-elect John Brassard said Monday night’s results showed Canadians want to send a message to all political parties that they must work together to solve current challenges.

“In my opinion, they want us all to work together to make sure we meet the challenges that lie ahead,” he said.

“I have not seen this country more divided than it is today in regional and other terms. To meet the challenges we face, we have to work in a unified way to find solutions. “

During their campaigns, both Brassard and Shipley said they learned that affordability is a critical issue for voters.

“There was a lot of talk about the cost of living and how that is affecting families in driving,” Brassard said.

“People were telling me that they were realizing that the price of everything was going up, including groceries, gas and housing.”

Brassard said he also heard from voters about COVID concerns, while Shipley said he heard about the opioid crisis, the supervised consumption site to be built soon in Barrie, and climate change.

“The fourth wave was definitely a concern for people,” added Shipley. “They wanted to make sure we are healthy and safe.”

Shipley said she also heard from business owners who are concerned about the staffing shortage. He said that his priorities have not changed, that he wants to continue working hard for the residents of his walks.

“I am hopeful that we will put that partisanship aside and begin to focus on the issues that are important to Canadians and the impact that many of the actions the government is taking are considered when decisions are made in Ottawa,” added Brassard. .

“These inflationary pressures that are happening and causing Canadians to pay higher prices for almost everything are really having a financial impact on family budgets.”
