Education and teacher unions sit down again to try to unblock the conflict

  • The meeting will be held with the mediation of the Department of Labor on the eve of the strike this Thursday

New attempt to unlock conflict open between Department of Education and the teachers unions by the policies of the ‘conselleria’. The Labor Department will be the stage, this Wednesday from 4:00 p.m., of the mediation meeting between strike committee and the Department. For days, the unions had been demanding that Educació convene the strike committee for mediation, an option that is only possible while there are strikes called, as is the case. This Thursday June 2 there is a call for a partial strike (from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.) and on June 9, a full-time strike.

The unions go to the mediation with the hope that the Department “has another proposal” that is closer to the demands of the teaching staff and allows to settle the open crisis in the educational community. “We trust that there will be a real negotiation, really,” he explained. Lorraine Martinezrepresentative of UGT in the strike committee.

“The Department already knows what our Red lines“, adds Martínez. He alludes to the recovery of teaching time for all teachers, both primary and secondary, this next academic year 22-23. Educació had proposed, at one point in the negotiation, that primary school teachers recover the teaching hour this coming September and left the secondary teaching hour for the 23-24 academic year. Option rejected by unions. “They applied the cuts to all of us at the same time and we want them to reverse them at the same time for all of us,” argues Iolanda Segura, spokesperson for Ustec.

This position led Educació to withdraw the offer and consider the negotiations broken. The Department argues that it is neither technically nor economically possible to recover teaching hours en bloc.

Pending how this mediation unfolds, for this Thursday the call for a partial strike is maintained in all public educational centers in Catalonia.
