Two games in the New York metropolitan area, two straight losses for the Edmonton Oilers.

After dropping a 6-5 decision to the Devils at the Prudential Center on Friday to close out 2021, Noah Dobson scored in overtime to give the New York Islanders a 3-2 win over the Oilers on Saturday afternoon. at the UBS Arena in Brooklyn.

“I give a lot of credit to our guys, they competed hard,” said head coach Dave Tippett after the New Years Day game.

Anders Lee opened the scoring with a power play goal late in the first, blocking a rebound under Mikko Koskinen.

The Oilers kept the pressure on for most of the period and kept going as Darnell Nurse jumped in his second of the season with 2:47 to play.

The Islanders tied it within three minutes of the third, when Anthony Beauvillier finished off a goal bout. The Oilers took over fourteen and a half minutes to fire in the period, with Jesse Puljujarvi finally breaking the drought with a long wrister on Ilya Sorokin.

With 1:08 left in overtime, Dobson beat Koskinen’s blocker with a wrist shot.

“We competed the whole game, it’s a shame we couldn’t get the extra point,” said Tippett.

As for Draisaitl, after the game, he referred to the consistency of the club.

“The ability to put 60 minutes together, we’ve been struggling with that all year,” said the Oilers superstar.

Before the game, the Oilers removed goalie Ilya Konovalov from the taxi squad as Mike Smith was unable to get dressed. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins did not play after leaving Friday’s game at New Jersey in the third period.
