Editorial I Curfew at Christmas

After the implementation of the strict measures announced by the Generalitat, which contrasts with those applied in other autonomous communities and with those generally proposed by the Spanish Government, lto Christmas Eve and the night of Christmas Day They were presented as a point of reference to gauge how citizens responded on such celebrated dates and with so much possibility of crowds. It could have been the case, as it already happened during the summer, that the restriction of meetings to ten people and, especially, the curfew (between 1 and 6 in the morning) in municipalities with more than 10,000 inhabitants with a 7-day incidence of more than 250 cases per 100,000, will lead to macrobotellones o en street parties not allowed, leading to situations difficult to control from the point of view of public order. We all remember what happened then, with scenes – especially in tourist areas and on the beach – not at all edifying. This time, however, with nightlife also closed and with the curfew in force (a measure, on the other hand, useful for municipalities to avoid episodes of concentration on public roads), there have been no particularly relevant cases. Beyond the eviction that the Barcelona Urban Guard had to practice in and around Mandri Street, with crowds in the bars in the area, and beyond, also, the denialist demonstrations through the streets of the city against the restrictions, with about 600 people, the majority without masks and without a safety distance, the truth is that this first trial by fire has been settled without notable incidents.

Let us remember that the curfew, effective until January 7, affects 125 Catalan municipalities, the most populated and, consequently, those where there could be more compromised situations. The good news is that it has been imposed, in a majority way, civic awareness in respect of controversial measures (and questioned by some experts and by the sectors most directly affected) that must, however, serve to try lower the figures of the sixth wave, currently critical, with the risk of a fired regrowth and with a general situation similar to the one we experienced, for example, last July. Both the closure of nightlife and the restrictions on meetings or the curfew generate controversy, especially from the referral of alarm status, last May, and the assumption of the actions by each autonomous community and the consequent divergences in the judicial sphere, but the truth is that, once implemented, it also corresponds to the citizen, in the exercise of their individual responsibility, contribute, with less interaction, to the remission of the pandemic curve.

Remains to be observed how events will unfold on New Years Eve, a party with more tendency than Christmas when it comes to generating concentrations and lengthening the night. It will be another determining point of the moment we live in. It is desirable that the assessment that we can make the next day follows the same trend as the one reported to us on the nights of December 24 and 25. For the good of all.
