Drummondville residents worried about their loved ones in Ukraine

The war in Ukraine and the multiplication of strikes by the Russian army are causing serious concern in Drummondville for a Quebecer married to a Ukrainian woman and a couple from that country.

Sylvain Nelson has difficulty concealing his concern. His 36-year-old wife, Viktoriia Kolesnyk, has been confined for more than three weeks to the basement of the school where she teaches in Kyiv. There are about a hundred of them, including many children.

Mr. Nelson manages to exchange text messages with his wife every two or three days.

Along with her 12-year-old son, she is stuck in Nyshin, a town northeast of the capital Kyiv.

Surrounded by the Russian army, the access roads are unreachable.

The most worrying thing is the supply of food which is done in dribs and drabs. Grocery store shelves are bare and the group is struggling to eat.

The news is hardly more encouraging for Oleksandr Bezverkhnii. His parents are still isolated following the Russian attacks. He hears from them through a friend.

He and his wife Elena are doing their best to support the Ukrainian people by collecting essential materials such as medicines and warm clothes. A fundraiser even raised more than $13,000.

Mr. Bezverkhnii hopes that this surge of generosity will continue because he unfortunately fears that the conflict will continue.
