Driver loses his life after running a red light in Estrie

The 40-year-old driver was headed northbound on Highway 139 when there was a red light and collided with another vehicle, according to police.

A driver died early Saturday after running a red light in St-Alphonse-de-Granby in the Estrie region.

The collision occurred around 1:15 am at the intersection of Highway 139 and Brodeur St.

According to Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Sgt. Stéphane Tremblay, the vehicle was headed northbound on Highway 139 when the driver ran a red light and collided with a vehicle headed west on Brodeur St.

“The second vehicle had the right of way,” Tremblay said.

The driver of the first vehicle, the one that ran the red light, died on the scene. According to police, he was a 40-year-old man from the nearby municipality of Brigham. The driver and passenger in the other vehicle suffered minor injuries, Tremblay said.

An investigation by the Sûreté du Québec is ongoing to gather more information about the circumstances of the fatal collision.
