Doug Ford says no to taxing the unvaccinated

Read me on the lips: there are no taxes for refusing to vaccinate.

Ontario will not follow Quebec’s example with a health tax for residents who are not vaccinated against COVID-19, Premier Doug Ford said Wednesday.

“We’re not going down that road,” Ford said as he toured a vaccination clinic at the Toronto Zoo a day after his Quebec counterpart, François Legault, said his province is preparing a tax on people who refuse to be vaccinated against the virus. COVID-19 and don’t do it. Not have a valid medical reason.

Ontario prefers a different route for its citizens, Ford said.

“We’re going to encourage them to go out and get vaccinated,” Ford added. “I am begging every person who is not vaccinated, please protect yourself, protect your family, protect your co-workers.”

Ontario’s chief medical officer, Dr. Kieran Moore, said he has not and would not recommend such a tax to the Ford government.

“In my opinion, it seems punitive.”

Other critics of such a tax have said it could open the door to more health care charges, such as fees for smokers or people who drink too much.
