Canadians would have lived in a ‘splendid and naive kind of superiority’ thinking it was not a problem in the country, she told a security conference Thursday in Ottawa .

“We have a lot to unpack in this country to understand what is happening and its impact on democracy, our institutions and our society,” Ms. Thomas said according to Global News. “This is not a problem that will go away.”

The former Deputy Minister of Defense then returned to the use of the Emergencies Act by the Trudeau government during the siege of Ottawa and the other “freedom convoys” that paralyzed the country for a month.

According to her, the use of this measure was justified by the occupation of the federal capital, which was considered important in itself.

“The people who organized this protest, and there were several factions, there is no doubt that they came to overthrow the government,” she said according to the outlet.

“Whether their ability to do it was there, whether their intention, their understanding of how to do it was realistic actually has nothing to do with what they wanted to do,” she said. added.

Protests against health measures and their handling by Ottawa have yet to be thoroughly scrutinized by Parliament. A joint committee of parliamentarians must also examine the Prime Minister’s decision to have invoked the Emergency Measures Act.
