Disinformation in Spanish worries Spanish members of Congress

Washington. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) in the United States has asked the heads of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and TikTok for a meeting to discuss “misinformation” in Spanish on social media.

“It is a priority to ensure that disinformation in Spanish is addressed quickly,” the CHC said in letters sent to the directors of those platforms.

It also calls for “discussing solutions to the problem,” according to a statement issued by the office of Bob Menéndez, chairman of the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee and a member of this group of Spanish lawmakers.

“Ending disinformation in Spanish should remain a priority,” Congressmen added in the letter, stressing that “many state and federal agencies, members of Congress and public health organizations rely on social networks to communicate important information.” to save lives and share federal resources during the covid-19 pandemic. “

Lately, the digital giants have had to intervene to combat misinformation about networks related to the pandemic or political interests.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, recently removed malicious networks that used vaccine discussions to harass professionals or sow division in society.

The social network Twitter announced a little over a month ago that it had eliminated nearly 3,500 accounts that carried out influence and propaganda operations for the benefit of the governments of different countries.

“As Spanish members of Congress, we have a duty to oversee the role that digital platforms play in how we communicate with our communities and how our communities receive important information,” the lawmakers demanded.
