Democratic memory law: the Valley of the Fallen will be called Cuelgamuros

PSOE and United We Can have agreed to change the name of Valley of the Fallen to Valley of Cuelgamuros, thus recovering the original name. This is included in one of the 30 joint amendments of the partners of the Government coalition, which have taken a step forward to unblock the democratic memory law, but they will still have to attract their allies from the investiture for the final vote.

The objective is for the Valley of Cuelgamuros to become a place of historical memory, opting for a resignification that aims to teach about the circumstances of its construction and its historical period, in order to strengthen constitutional and democratic values.

On the other hand, portraits or other artistic representations of protagonists of the repression during the dictatorship may not be shown in representative places or in public access areas. In addition, the revocation of the honorary distinctions in the State security forces and bodies is completed and the nobility titles granted to 33 high Francoist positions are abolished, such as the duchies of Primo de Rivera, Calvo Sotelo or Queipo de Llano.

Despite these amendments, PSOE and United We can still get the support of ERC and EH Bildu for the rule to come to fruition. However, this does seem closer, because the agreements include the green light for justice to investigate the crimes of the civil war and the Franco dictatorship, one of the main requests from Catalans and Basques.
