Death under investigation after body found in York River at Bancroft: OPP – Peterborough | The Canadian News

Bancroft OPP says an investigation was launched after a man’s body was found in the York River at Bancroft on Thursday afternoon.

According to police, officers responded around 3:30 p.m. to a report of a man killed in the river near Hastings Heritage Way.

On Friday night, a statement from the OPP indicated that the Ontario Office of the Chief Coroner helped identify the victim as 40-year-old Matthew Welsh. Hometown location was not provided.

“An investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the death,” the OPP said.

The Bancroft OPP Crimes Unit is seeking the public’s assistance for any information related to this incident, particularly if it becomes aware of Welsh’s whereabouts in the days leading up to his death.
