At least 55 migrants died after the trailer they were traveling in overturned on a highway in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas on Thursday. The vast majority of the unit included Central Americans seeking to reach U.S.
The accident caused one of the worst death toll in migrants in Mexico in the last decade. Here are some other incidents in which groups of migrants have died trying to reach the United States.
Massacre in Tamaulipas (2010)
A total of 72 migrants, mainly from Central America, were killed in the San Fernando municipality of the northern state. Tamaulipas. The group came primarily from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, but also included people from Ecuador, Brazil, and India.
Train derailment in Tabasco (2013)
At least six people were killed when a freight train nicknamed “The beast“It derailed in a remote area of the southern state of Tabasco. Drowned in the Rio Grande (2019)
A migrant from El Salvador and his 24-month-old daughter drowned while trying to cross the Bravo River from Mexico to Texas. A photo of the two lying face down in the water drew international attention and became a symbol of criticism of then-President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policies. Many migrants have died while fording the river that divides the two countries.
Massacre in Tamauplipas (2021)
The bodies of 19 people were found along a popular migrant smuggling route in an area in the Camargo municipality, Tamaulipas, many of them badly charred and with gunshot wounds. Among the victims were 16 migrants from Guatemala, all from the town of Comitancillo, and two Mexicans.
Road Accidents in Veracruz (2020 and 2021)
Four Cuban migrants perished and eight others were injured when the truck they were traveling in overturned on a highway in the state. Veracruz, on the Gulf Coast, in September 2021, according to Mexican media and state authorities.
The previous year, a bus carrying migrants capsized on another highway in Veracruz, leaving one person dead and 81 injured. The passengers were mostly from Guatemala and Honduras.
Border accident in California (2021)
A road accident in California, a few kilometers north of the border, left 13 dead, mostly Mexican citizens. The victims were part of a group of migrants who reportedly slipped through a hole, cut by human smugglers, in a fence along the US-Mexico border.
