Members of the CSN-affiliated Fédération de la santé et des services sociaux (FSSS) will leave work after negotiations ended Tuesday “without significant progress” to justify suspending the strike.

The CSQ-affiliated Fédération des intervenantes en petite enfance (FIPEQ) has yet to announce its strike date, although a strike is not scheduled for this week and negotiations are scheduled to resume on Thursday.

The Syndicat québécois des Employés de service (SQEES), affiliated with FTQ, will announce the result of its strike vote on Wednesday morning.

The main stumbling block in the negotiations is the level of salary increases that the daycare employees who work as kitchen, maintenance and administration staff will receive.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister François Legault reiterated that the parties are not far apart on the issue of educator pay. The salary of the “other” workers remains a sticking point.

The province has offered higher salary increases to nursery educators, considering them underpaid and underpaid, a situation that could worsen as fewer people enroll in early childhood education programs at CEGEPs. Quebec’s offering is a wage range of $ 21.38 to $ 28.31 an hour, with two new levels coming in at $ 30.03 an hour.

But the salary offers made so far to other groups of employees are not as generous. FIPEQ says that support staff receive 20 to 35 percent less than their peers in the public sector, depending on their job title.
