“Day of the Dead”, the protest against violence against women in Mexico

Holding crosses with the names of murdered women, hundreds of people marched in Mexico’s capital on Wednesday to protest violence amid a steady increase in femicides in the country.

The so-called march of “Day of the Dead” It was held one day after the traditional Mexican holiday that commemorates the deceased. About 500 people participated in the protest, according to a Reuters witness.

Some 762 women were murdered between January and September this year, an increase of 5% compared to the same period in 2020, according to government data.

The recent spike continues with the 130% increase in femicides from 2015 to 2020 that has sparked protests demanding urgent action to stop the violence.

The Secretary of Security, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, congratulated in the morning of a decrease in femicides between August and September of this year, adding that the Government has opened 73 justice centers throughout Mexico to help women victims of the violence.

Emergency calls related to violence against women in Mexico increased more than 30% in 2020, as measures to contain the spread of Covid-19 kept families at home.
